The Cambridge Travel Co.
On February 1st, Alex in my MA option arranged for our group to have a day trip to Cambridge. Since I've spent so much time in Oxford in the past, I was eager to go to Cambridge and see how the two compare. At 11, two others in my MA and I boarded a train in King's Cross to meet the others there for an adventure.
We had a marvelous time, visiting the chapel at King's College:
Eating the best scotch eggs I've ever had:
Poking around an antique bookshop:
Going to a manuscripts handling session at Trinity College:
And finally attending a lecture featuring Paul Binksy and Mary Carruthers (so brilliant). I also saw the original Cambridge Satchel Co ...
I didn't get home until 10:40 and I was one of the first to go!
My thoughts on Cambridge: It was a very lovely place, but nothing so special as the dreaming spires of Oxford. And I'm not biased at all. What key difference? The college courts (not quads in Cambridge, oh no), are much, much larger than anything in Oxford, which is cramped with smaller quads. Kings and Trinity were both absolutely enormous. Getting a chance to interact with manuscripts in their library including the Trinity Apocalypse, the masterwork of their collection, was an unparalleled opportunity and the most freedom I've ever had touching these objects. Amazing!
